Geoscenes –Geocaching Photography Project

I realise that there’s a UK based photo monthly “Contest”on the UK forum on the Frog site, but I thought it might be nice to have a weekly collection of photos from Geocachers gathered in one place.

Initially this will be a weekly post on this site,if it takes off then I will look at setting up a dedicated site for Geoscenes.

So,what is it about?  It’s quite simple!

  1. Take a Geocaching related photo.
  2. Upload it somewhere.
  3. Send the link to us with a description and a Geocache GC number (if relevant).
  4. On Sunday we’ll compile the week’s submissions and create a digest post.

A couple of advisories:

  • Make sure it’s family friendly!
  • Try to make it Geocaching related.
  • ANYONE can participate!
  • Commenting on other peoples’photos is encouraged!

See the dedicated Geoscenes page for more information. I look forward to seeing your lovely photos!

Show Three On The Way?

Firstly and foremost please allow me to apologise for not releasing a podcast for August. The month has been very horrible for me and for a while I was questioning whether to continue with the podcast at all. Much happened in other areas of my life that made me re-consider my future. I then realised that I was better than all that,I should pull myself together and get on with it.

I received a couple of particularly rude emails from anonymous sources to the Podcast’s email account questioning my parents status, suggesting that I should disappear from the world and Geocaching and never return, along with several other suggestions that are unrepeatable. Coming in the time when I was struggling anyway, these didn’t help. However, with a big two fingered salute at those people,I have only this to say:

Nothing is forcing you to listen to the podcast. There’s always an unsubscribe button. Alternatively, make it known who you are,use language that is appropriate for broadcast and state your complaints concisely (if you know what that means) and I will happily reply to your mails and address your concerns in the show. It makes for entertaining listening for those that wanted a “meaty”story anyway!

So,after all that waffle, what does this mean for the podcast? I will be recording it Thursday and Friday for release Friday or the weekend. Contents as they sit at the moment (in no particular order):

  • Feedback from the Mega Event organisers. Let me know if you guys want to say anything to them too!
  • Competition results. Yes,I do know who won but I figured that as it is so close to releasing show 3 I would announce it in the show. I will announce it on Twitter and on the post for the show too.
  • My Encounter with friendly cachers at Scout Camp.
  • More on the iPhone for hiding caches.  This has been a hot topic in my mailbox!  Including (hopefully) hints for getting better coordinates with the device…
  • Apps for iPhone for Caching (by request from Confused Chimp)
  • Shoutouts, milestones, stories etc.  Get yours in quick!
  • Question of the month –any suggestions?
  • Anything else you luvverly lot can think of!

I would also like to (thanks to a suggestion from a new cacher) do a section on Geocaching for beginners.  Any suggestions for advice for the beginner will be much appreciated.

Thanks for your support folks,I hope to actually meet some of you in the future!

PS Any volunteers for an interview?? ;o)

Show 2 –One Week On…

Hey all!

After the kerfuffle to get Show 2 online I didn’t immediately update the show notes as I said I would,I then had a heck of a week with Scouting and a trip to see a little show called Legally Blonde in London getting in the way. Rather than update the original post I thought I would create a new one with a little more information and the show notes in.

So,in case you missed it,the first thing to mention is that we have a competition in this month’s show. We have a real prize too! The guys on the Mega Scotland Committee very generously donated one of the event geocoins as a prize. Look:

July competition prize for the podcast - unactivated Mega Sco... on Twitpic

Ain’t it gorgeous! So,how do you enter? Well, you’ll have to listen to the show. The question is really really easy and just requires you to send an email to me with your answer. You must send it to a specific email address though so no random email entries!

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CLOSING DATE IS 30 JULY AT MIDNIGHT,NOT 31 JULY AS MENTIONED IN THE PODCAST!!

Very quickly (and I’m sorry to bore you with this),I have had some people complain that I didn’t mention the iPhone 4 in the podcast when talking about hiding caches using the iPhone. There’s a very good reason for that –I forgot! I will be bringing the subject up again in next month’s show so if you want your opinion heard then let me know! While on the subject, the Idea for highlighting iPhone hides that I raised on the feedback site is here.

Also, some have mentioned that the show is a little quiet when listening. I apologise for this,I don’t know what happened as I did nothing different for this show than show 1. I will go stand in the naughty corner and try harder for next month.

July’s Question of The Month:

Do you know who and where your nearest geocacher is?

Replies via the usual methods please!

Show 2 –Mega?

Download (33.56 mb) | Listen (36:39)

With a huge apology to all our listeners, the show is finally available. Technical difficulties and summer parties and BBQs meant that the show is a few days late.

However,It’s uploaded now for your listening pleasure. As I am writing this past midnight (00:45 to be exact) I will update this post with all the show notes on Tuesday when I am more awake…

Keep an eye on iTunes to pick it up from there, alternatively you can listen to the show below (Flash again I’m afraid so it won’t play direct from an iPhone) or download it from the link above to listen at your pleasure!

Recording Show 2

Just wanted to let y’all know that I am going to record show 2 of the podcast this evening.

As mentioned in the Twitter feed a couple of days ago,we have a competition to run this month, witharealprizeandeverything! It’s a collectable prize, but you’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out what it is and how to enter!

If everything goess to plan, the podcast should be available sometime over the weekend,Sunday afternoon at the latest. Bear in mind that I have just been invited to Kingston-Upon-Thames tomorrow to cache for the afternoon so expect Sunday rather than Saturday…

Wish me luck and don’t forget that Skype is still running if you want to say hi!

Oh,by the way, sometime next week the website will go offline for a few hours while I do an upgrade to the software. I wil ltry to go as much warning as possible!
